A few weeks back, popular TikTok creators Lunden Stallings and Olivia Bennett found themselves at the center of a phenomenon all too common in internet culture - the emergence of past racist tweets.
The phenomenon of popular online figures having racist, sexist, homophobic, or other harmful past ideas come to light is referred to as a “milkshake duck.”
The term comes from a viral 2016 tweet and speaks volumes regarding what happens when prejudice meets the permanence of the internet.
The problem of the milkshake duck may be a public relations crisis, but it also speaks volumes to human hubris and the belief one’s past won’t be found.
